Birthstones explained

The process of understanding the range of gems representing both calendar months and zodiac dates began for me years ago. Recently, I was commissioned to design a bangle that was to include gemstones of all the family members including children and grandchildren. Square gemstones were used to represent the male members of the family, with the female members represented with round stones.
We created the simple bangle to be worn as an everyday piece with coloured stones and every day our client wears it, she is aware that it represents her family:

Some of the gemstones included are: Amethyst (February), Aquamarine (March), yellow Diamond (April), Emerald (May), Peridot (August), blue Sapphire (September), pink Tourmaline (October), and blue Zircon (December).
Another recent commission of a birthstone piece is this beautiful simple ring:

It features Sapphire in pink (September), Peridot in green (August), Alexandrite in green/bronze (June), Garnet in pink (January) and Diamonds (April). As you can see, gemstones like sapphire and garnet are available in some beautiful unexpected colours, allowing beautiful colour combinations.
Over the years we have used this concept frequently. It is very personal and think about it – it would be very rare for this to be repeated. What are the chances of a husband or partner and wife to have their birthstones and their children the same as another family?
We have often been dealt a challenge when the birthstone is either a colour the client doesn’t like or a gem that is not as practical – like a pearl. Luckily most birthstones have an alternative and we have made some of wonderful pieces over the years.
If you would like a beautiful piece of hand made jewellery designed using your family’s birthstones, come and see me. I’d love to show you all of the coloured gemstones available. Call me on 08 8338 3109, or just pop in.

Love
