Looking after precious jewellery this summer

Summer holidays are a great time to wear and enjoy your jewellery – here are our tips to keep it safe and looking great:

Avoid wearing your jewellery in chlorinated or salt water pools. The chlorine can discolour gold and silver, and can damage gemstones and pearls.

Wipe your pearl jewellery (necklaces, earrings, pendants, rings) with a soft cloth when you take them off to remove perfume, hairspray and perspiration –  the alcohol in these can damage and eat away the natural nacre that gives pearls their stunning lustre.

Make sure your jewellery insurance is up-to-date – nothing ruins a festive season like losing a precious piece and not being able to replace it.

Check the silk thread that your pearls are threaded on to – are the pearls moving around a lot between the knots, or is the thread dirty? If yes, it’s time to have them rethreaded in the new year, to keep them looking their best.
